Kushida Shrine is located in the center of Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, and is affectionately called “Ogushida-san” by the locals. It has a long history and has been worshipped by people as the general guardian of Hakata.
Birthplace of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage “Hakata Gion Yamakasa
Kushida Shrine is also famous as the birthplace of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, known for its heroic Yamakasa floats.
Yamakasa, held every July, is a summer tradition in Fukuoka that attracts many people from Japan and abroad. Yamakasa is on display throughout the year in the precincts of the shrine, and its powerful appearance overwhelms visitors.
More than 1,000 years of history and numerous legends
Founded in 757, it is one of the oldest shrines in Fukuoka.
The “Kushida no Gingko” tree, said to be over 1,000 years old, stands in the precincts of the shrine and is a power spot for people to pray for good health and longevity. Kushida Shrine is also filled with history and mystery, with numerous legends and sayings left behind.
